April 7, 2014 – Merle Kindred: Creating Attainable, Sustainable Built Environments: Two Indian NGOs

The Centre of Science and Technology for Rural Development (COSTFORD) and the Laurie Baker Centre for Habitat Studies (LBC), Indian NGOs, are drawing from 5,000 years of architectural wisdom and using modern technology appropriate for climate and culture. They’re focusing on eliminating rural poverty housing and urban slums and creating healthy communities.

Merle Kindred, PhD, has travelled to India each year over the last decade and spent significant time studying and assisting in the work of COSTFORD and LBC. She publishes and presents internationally on the work of these NGOs based in the State of Kerala.

March 31, 2014 – Todd Redding: A Virtual Geology Field Tour of Penticton Area

Join OC Professor Todd Redding for a virtual field tour of local geology. Todd will demonstrate a new website that provides an overview of our interesting, if complicated, local geology.

Todd is a professor at Okanagan College in Penticton who teaches courses in Geography, Earth Science and Environmental Science.

March 24, 2014 – ENACTUS Project Showcase

Enactus is a student run organization, operating in 36 countries, finding and addressing needs in our communities. By addressing these needs we are empowering participants to create change and achieve their goals. Our team at Okanagan College Is currently running 13 programs with an additional 4 in development, and we would like to highlight some of them in this showcase. During the showcase we will be highlighting the success we recently achieved at the Western Canadian Regional Competition in Financial Literacy Education, EcoLiving Green, and Entrepreneurship categories.

March 17, 2014 – Dave Del Rizzo: Community Radio in Penticton

A society of enthusiastic locals are working towards the goal of establishing a volunteer-based, FM broadcast station in Penticton. Society President Dave Del Rizzo, will give some perspective to this effort, explaining some of the basics of community radio in Canada, along with a summary of the achievements to date, and also the challenges facing the society as they move forward with this project. This talk presents the perfect opportunity to find out more about this exciting, community-based endeavour.

By day, Dave Del Rizzo is a Technical Officer at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory.  In his spare time, he is the current president of the Peach City Community Radio Society, volunteer, and aspiring community radio programmer.
